2020 barangay elections may be postponed to 2022

An official of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) will no longer be surprised if there will be moves to postpone the May 2020 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls.

Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez said the BSKE (Barangay and SK Elections) had always been the target for previous postponements, for one reason or another.

“The idea of pushing for the postponement of the BSKE is neither new nor innovative,” he said in an interview.

8 drug-affected Baguio City barangays cleared.  The Regional barangay Drug Clearing Program Oversight Committee headed by PDEA recently declared eight drug-affected barangays in the city as having been cleared from the proliferation of illegal drugs.

The barangays are Aurora Hill and Lopez Jaena within the jurisdiction of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) Station No. 6, Cabinet Hill and Engineer’s Hill under BCPO Station No. 3, Burnham-Legarda and BGH Compound under BCPO Station No. 5 and Upper Market Subdivision and New Lucban under BCPO Station No. 7.

1,700 residents of a far-flung Samar barangay to benefit from newly-completed P100 million access road.  Residents of Barangay San Pelayo in the town of Gandara will now be safe from the danger of riding in boats especially during the rainy seasons when going to nearby communities after the completion of a road in the area.

The 3.64-kilometer road aims to connect the barangay to Barangay San Agustin.

Prior to the completion of the road, residents of Barangay San Pelayo either ride small boats that run up and down Gandara River or walk through the narrow pathway along the rice fields.

It is also expected to facilitate transport of agricultural products easier and contribute to the local economic activity of Gandara, Samar. READ MORE

Barangays to face charges for non-collection of garbage.  The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) reminded barangays of their responsibility to collect their garbage.

According to Leocadio Trovela, DILG Director for Region 7, it is the barangay government that is mainly responsible for the segregation and collection garbage as mandated by Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

Failure to comply means facing charges.

While the DILG has no disciplining authority over barangays, the agency can file charges against them before the city or municipal council or the Office of the Ombudsman, he said. READ MORE

Boracay barangay officials complaining of illegal alien vendors.   After a government task force padlocked foreign-owned and unregistered restaurants and lodging houses in Boracay, many aliens are now into sidewalk vending business.

Barangay officials in the island-resort and in this town made the disclosure and requested the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to stop the proliferation of these ambulant vendors by arresting and deporting them.

They cited the case of a group of foreigners, mostly women, posting themselves right at the single arrival-exit point of the island selling swimsuits and other ready-to-wear dresses to local and foreign tourists.

Year-round threat of dengue places entire island barangay in Iloilo under state of calamity. The entire  island barangay o San fernando in Carles town in Iloilo is now under a state of calamity due to the year-round threat of dengue, says the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Julieto Manggasang.

Since May 14, he said San Fernando has recorded 65 dengue cases, though no death has so far been recorded. most of the patients who are school children 18 years old and below, are admitted to Jesus M. Colmenares Memorial District Hospital in Balasan, Iloilo. The critical cases were brought to West Visayas Medical Center. READ MORE

Good governance antidote to insurgency problem -- Punong Barangays in Cagayan de Oro City told. The DILG Region 10 office in partnership with National Intelligence Coordinating Agency or NICA in the region, briefed 80 punong  barangays on how to deal with the insurgency problem in their respective jurisdictions.

Free Wi-Fi available soon in 1,000 Bangsamoro barangays.  Free Wi-Fi will be made available in local government units (LGUs) and schools in 1,000 pilot barangays in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to help the fledgling region cope with the pace of development in the country.

The enabling memorandum of agreement (MoA) was signed here on June 26 by the BARMM’s Ministry of the Interior and Local Government (MILG), the Department of Information, Communication and Technology (DICT) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the building of Tech-for-Aid centers in constituent-schools and local government units. Bangsamoro officials to visit poor Basilan barangay chief after his story went viral in the social media. Officials of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) are reportedly set to visit a barangay chairman in Al Barka, Basilan after a story and photo of his dire personal situation went viral on social media.

The Office of BARMM Interim Chief Minister Ahod “Murad” Ebrahim said a team from the regional Ministry of Interior and Local Government (MILG) will conduct the initial visit soon to Barangay Linuan to meet its chairman Adbullah Maranie Hatain.

Lawyer Naguib Sinarimbo, MILG-BARMM minister, confirmed that he will personally lead the team on the visit to Linuan, one of 16 villages in Al-Barka town formerly known as hotbed of Abu Sayyaf guerillas. READ MORE
