Environmental organization Greenpeace installed solar panels and charging stations in Bohol's "sinking" islands of Bilangbilangan and Batasan to strengthen the residents' climate response capabilities and transition away from fossil fuel dependence. It contracted the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology to acquire, engineer and install the stations, and conduct a solar training workshop for volunteers and community partners.
According to a Greenpeace report, Bohol was among the areas worst hit by Super Typhoon Odette in 2021, suffering P41.6 billion in damages to infrastructure, the economy and other critical sectors, including development administration, social, environment and the private sector.
Greenpeace said that for months, the province was without electricity, crippling water supply communication, mobility and economic activity. To date, the islands have not fully recovered with intermittent power supply, leaving the communities vulnerable to extreme heat during summer and at risk of isolation should a tropical cyclone cut off energy for days. Batasan Island Barangay Captain Anabelle Canete noted that solar power would be a great help during storms or disasters because "they can be used at any time," especially after a storm when "we would have no electricity." Puerto Princesa cites importance of barangays in solving waste management woes. The waste management office in Puerto Princesa City recently reported that, on average, 180 tons of garbage were collected every day in 2024, a small decrease from the 189 tons that were collected in 2023.
The sustainability and efficiency of waste collection services are hindered by financial constraints, resource limitations, and non-compliance with waste management protocols at the barangay level, according to Jakiri Illescas, special operations officer of the City Solid Waste Management Office (CSWMO), despite this decline.
The collected waste comprises two primary types: residual waste, which includes non-recyclable household trash, and agricultural waste, such as tree branches and other natural debris. READ MORE
