Barangay Bagong Silang, the country’s largest, now becomes six new separate barangays

(MANILA, September1, 2024) Voters in Caloocan City have decided to split the country's most populous barangay, Barangay Bagong Silang or barangay 178, into six smaller and independent barangays.

At least 22,854 residents voted in favor of the division while 2,594 voted against it, according to the proclamation of the Barangay Plebiscite Board of Canvassers.  A copy of the canvass votes was sent to reporters by the Commission on Elections Sunday morning, September 1.

The plebiscite ratifies Republic Act. No. 11993, which President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed on April 5.  This law officially divides Barangay Bagong Silang into separate and distinct barangays. READ MORE   

1,500 families in 2 Iloilo City barangays gained access to clean drinking water. Around 1,500 residents here gained access to potable water supply with the inauguration of the 925 linear meters pipe-laying project of the Metro Pacific Iloilo Water (MPIW) in Jaro district on Thursday.

The PHP7 million project will serve residents in Sitio Ilaya, Barangay Tabuc Suba, and Barangay San Isidro, including the Uswag condominium.

“This is just one of the projects that we rolled out. We still have ongoing projects in Barangay Lanit and four more in City Proper. Our target is to expand the water availability and service coverage here in Iloilo City,” MPIW chief operating officer Angelo David Berba said in an interview. Cebu barangay partners with Visayan Electric Co. to plant mangroves in its coastal areas. On Saturday, September 7, 2024, employees from Visayan Electric Co., the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) One to Tree, the local government unit of Barangay San Isidro, and the San Isidro Fisherfolks Association came together for a meaningful environmental initiative.

This marks the fifth consecutive year  that Visayan Electric has spearheaded a mangrove planting effort in San Isidro, San Fernando, a community that hosts one of its key substations.

The volunteers, including local residents and partner companies, as well as company staff, enthusiastically participated in planting 2,000 mangrove seedlings. This effort is crucial for the local ecosystem, as mangroves play a vital role in coastal protection, supporting biodiversity, and combating climate change by sequestering carbon. Rizal barangay, new headquarters of Ayala-based billionaire. Philippine Infradev Holdings led by self-styled Antonio Tiu is moving out of its Makati office tower to a fishing and farming municipality in Rizal province.

The company announced it is moving out of its office on the 38th floor of Rufino Pacific Tower on Ayala Avenue to its site office at Spinal Road, Brgy. Tatala, Binangonan, Rizal.

Baguio City barangays to establish communal compost pits. City officials recently urged barangay officials in the city to consider identifying an area in their respective areas of jurisdiction to serve as a communal compost pit for their constituents. .

nder Resolution No. 528, series of 2024, local legislators stated that barangay officials in the city’s one hundred twenty eight barangays may look for a suitable location for a communal compost pit in their respective areas of jurisdiction that will cater to their constituents need to dispose their biodegradable waste generated in the households.

The council claimed that biodegradable waste is allegedly no longer collected by the City General services office and the residents are being encouraged to compost their biodegradable garbage in their respective homes. Teenager shot dead inside barangay hall.  A 16-year-old boy in Cabuyao, Laguna died after he was shot in the head inside the barangay hall for allegedly stealing steel bars. 

According to Nico Waje’s exclusive report on "Saksi" the victim identified as John Christian Valenzuela or “Dadoy” was asked to go to the barangay hall on Sunday night amid his alleged involvement in theft.

ASF-affected barangays in the country soar to 472 cases.  African swine fever (ASF) continues to spread in the country as the number of infected barangays has increased to 472 from 458, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA).

Data from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), an attached agency of the DA, showed 14 barangays were added to the “red” or ASF-infected zones as of Sept. 6.

The virus has affected 115 municipalities, 32 provinces and 15 regions, the DA said.the need that its officials be accorded the status of and given the privileges granted to regular government employees. Iloilo barangay officials to convene for annual Liga Day celebration. Approximately 12,000 barangay officials are set to convene at the Iloilo Sports Complex in La Paz, Iloilo City on September for the annual Liga Day 2024.

This year’s event, themed “Connecting Barangays, Shaping Tomorrows”, aims to foster unity and accelerate progress across the province’s barangays, according to Liga ng mga Barangay (LnB)-Iloilo Chapter president and ex-officio Provincial Board member Amalia Victoria Debuque.

DILG Bataan honors top eco-friendly barangays.  DILG Bataan proudly congratulates Brgy. Lote Puerto Rivas of Balanga City and Brgy. San Antonio of Bagac for excelling in the 2024 Barangay Environmental Compliance Audit (BECA). These two barangays have earned the top spots in Bataan and will represent the province at the regional level.

In addition, Brgy. Cupang and Brgy. Pto. Rivas Ibaba of Balanga City placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the city category. Meanwhile, Brgy. Colo of Dinalupihan and Brgy. East Daang Bago of Samal ranked 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the municipal category.

BECA, under the Manila Bay Clean-up Program, evaluates barangays' compliance with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (RA 9003). SSS vows to provide social security protection to barangay officials nationwide. Social Security System (SSS) President and Chief Executive Officer Rolando Ledesma Macasaet pushed for the SSS membership of barangay captains and kagawads serving in around 42,000 barangays nationwide.

Macasaet spoke with barangay officials attending the Liga ng Mga Barangay’s National Congress on August 13 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City to encourage them to become SSS members and receive a lifetime monthly pension when they retire from public service.

“Many of our barangay officials and workers serve their constituents for 10 or 20 years. However, when they retire from public service, they do not get any separation pay or monthly pension. Now, through the SSS membership, we are offering you an opportunity to get a monthly pension when you retire from being a barangay official,” Macasaet said. Sipalay City holds 3-day nutrition workshop for barangays. Cebu City Health officials on 9 September proposed to increase the monthly honorarium of barangay health workers (BHWs) from P7,500 to P10,000 monthly.

Altea Racuya-Lim, BHW coordinator for the Cebu City Health Department (CCHD), emphasized the need to increase as BHWs have 24/7 work nature.

There are more than 900 BHWs across the city’s 80 barangays.

 Residents of Malabon City barangay dismayed over pile of uncollected trash. Residents of Barangay Longos, Malabon City are complaining about the foul smell and presence of mosquitoes caused by a massive pile-up of trash materials in their streets.


Numerous residents have posted photos and videos of the trash pile-up, which has taken up one lane of the road and attracted cockroaches and rats.

Aging, a warehouse caretaker along Dalagang Bukid Street, said the trash accumulation has been affecting their health and fishing vessel business.

Quezon barangay officials file case against mayor. The mayor here is in hot water after a case was filed against him before the Office of the Ombudsman by members of a village council.

The case was filed by Barangay Mabutag council members against Reynaldo Rosilla Jr., the incumbent mayor of Buenavista, whom they accused of violating Batas Pambansa Bilang 265, an Act Prohibiting the Extraction of Gravel and Sand from Beaches, and Providing Penalties Therefor, Philippine Mining Act 7942 in relation to Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order 2010-21 and Republic Act 3019, Sec. 3 (Grave Misconduct and Abuse of Authority).

Waste reduction scheme to be tested in 4 Baguio City barangays. An experimental waste-to-resource collection scheme will be implemented in four barangay (villages) in the Summer Capital from September 9 to December 31 to boost the city's waste reduction campaign.

The system will require Barangay Bakakeng Central, Guisad Surong, Gibraltar and Irisan to manage the segregation of their wastes to separate recyclable wastes from residual refuse.

Mandaue City barangay captain cries “harassment”. The barangay captain of Guizo, Mandaue City has cried political harassment after the city government recalled their garbage trucks due to alleged failure to manage the garbage problem in the barangay.

Barangay Captain Jesus Neri Sr. said that he had been experiencing “political harassment” from the city government since 2023.

According to him, city administrator Atty.
